Book Recommendation

God and Gay Christian

Many conservative Christians want to be loving toward their gay neighbor but struggle to be affirming because of their understanding of scripture. In this book, Matthew Vines, an Evangelical gay man, draws on recent biblical scholarship to make a strong case that one can hold a high view of the authority of scripture and also affirm gay marriage in the church. While my understanding of scripture is not as conservative as Vines’, this book is very well written. In addition to clear, research based arguments, Vines also shares moving personal stories. And he doesn’t just cover the six verses in the Bible that specifically address homosexuality but also explores the biblical concept of marriage as a sanctifying covenant, the spiritual gift of celibacy, and the importance of reason, tradition, and experience when interpreting the Bible for today. If you are a conservative Christian that wrestles with the issue of homosexuality, I highly recommend this book.
